About the event

The International Dark Sky Association is holding their Discover the Night International Dark Sky Week 2023 and to mark it we have a star party planned at the Wai-iti Dark Sky Park. It will be either Apr 21 or 22 - the 21st if the weather is good; or we will postpone to the 22nd if the weather on the 21st is bad. The event will be cancelled if Apr 22 also has bad weather.

Astronomers will be there with telescopes you can look through, and you will be able to ask them questions about the night sky and how to protect the night from light pollution.

There is ample car parking, please park in the freedom camping area and walk up the lane to the reserve.

Wrap up warm - we recommend a hat and gloves - and think about bringing a thermos of something warm! We discourage white headlamps and torches on the reserve during a star party event as they ruin dark-adapted vision, but you might want to have something to help you find your way up the lane and an case you need to use the toilet. Note that the only toilet facilities on site are a vault toilet, so please plan accordingly.
